Tiny Steps

Tiny steps are so important. Every single one of them should be celebrated. After all, what gets celebrated, gets repeated. As we progress through this life, we are met with numerous obstacles. Some days we have a clear run, on othertimes it feels like they’re queuing up to take their turn at getting in our way.

Regardless of what you are trying to achieve, these ‘bumps’ in the road are often the result of something we have created ourselves. Maybe it was a time when we stuck our head in the sand, or just thought ‘It’ll be alright’, without working through the probability of outcomes.

If you want to lose weight, then do it – get serious about, make it your #1 Target – do something everyday that contributes to your weight-loss. See if you can lose just a pound a week. This time next year, you’ll be over 4 stone lighter. Don’t think you need to loses two stone in a month, or sign up for overpriced, and under achieving ‘wonder drugs’ or diets

You want to write a book – then write it. You don’t have to write the whole thing in a week. Write a few lines everyday. Take care and be reasonable with yourself, don’t push yourself so hard and end up punishing yourself. Start being kind to yourself and celebrate the small wins along the way.

Everyone of your Tiny Steps, add up to a huge achievement.

A friend of mine, who was 40 at the time, decided she wanted to get a degree. Her thinking was. ‘Hey, I’m 40 and don’t have a degree. In three years, I’ll be 43, so I may as well be 43 with a Degree’. In three years, she had achieved her goal. Simply because she had the determination to overcome all the obstacle in her way – the time, the money,

I once received a lovely letter from Hammersmith Council informing me that I had occupied a Yellow Box under the flyover and for this pleasure they required £80 from me. My initial reaction, was to get annoyed. I was frustrated and the blood started to boil. At which point, I realised, the only person I should have been mad at, was me. I knew the rules, I committed the offence, I simply didn’t pay enough attention to the vehicles in front of me and entered the yellow box without any real possibility of not stopping. It Was All My Fault!

This turns out to be a good metaphor for life. If we look ahead, make a few rational decisions considering the probable outcome of our actions, then we can be reasonably sure of how successful we are going to be. Look at what you’re doing – look ahead – then make your decision. If you like the probable outcomes – sometimes these are worth the risk and reward – others not. The risk for me in Hammersmith (£80 fine), far outweighed the reward (gaining 60 secs on a 100 mile trip home).

So when these bumps appear, it’s important to view them just as that, they are just a bump and need to be negotiated. With a little positive thought.

So, just take a few small steps. In time, you’ll be able to look back a see just how far you have travelled, you’ll see your footprints and just how far you have come.

This is a small blog post. My aim is to build an archive on hundreds, but I can’t do that it one day, so here is small one and I’m celebrating that.
